A case study of 2 dreams.

The following dreams belong to a woman that, in real life, is a devout church-goer, but that has been dealing with problems in keeping a relationship and conceiving a child. Here are the dreams:

Dream 1:

I am in a well where a sewer of dirty water comes, and the water looks brown and dirty, and I am in the water. There are people who throw more dirty water into the well. There is a creature in the water and initially I am scared and I think it’s a shark, but it’s just floating in the water. Then I realize it’s a lizard. Later I’m lining up to go see the doctor but I run into my friend J who tests me and I’m positive. Then I realize it’s a pregnancy test. J also tells me that my partner has to come to Church. I still can’t find the doctor to see me.

Interpretation:

I always suspected, by multiple signs, that she was suffering from strong feelings of guilt, sadness and sorrow. Water, which usually represents the unconscious, the reservoir of life, is represented in this dream as stagnant and dirty water in a well, or a pond. As it is, she is being overwhelmed by this feelings since she is halfway into the water. The flux of life runs dirty. The creature is none other than herself, the split off part of her personality, her unconscious. Naturally, she is afraid of her own unconscious. The dream represents the unconscious, first as a potential shark, terrifying, and later as a lizard, the only part of her unconscious she may be slightly aware of, since the lizard is not in the water, but on solid land. The lizard here may signify the lower instincts that need to crawl in order to avoid the feelings of guilt. Because she’s afraid of the shark, she needs to be a lizard in life, a non-theatening creature. These are things she won’t allow herself to see in waking life for she’s a devout church-goer, therefore a “good” girl.

The dream, then, changes into a completely different setting. Now, the dream will be more direct by depicting her as a sick person who is in need of a doctor (she’s not aware she’s ill, in real life or in her dream, but the unconscious makes this conclusion, for who lines up to see a doctor if not someone who is ill?). Naturally, she finds no doctor since she does not even know she’s ill. Then, she runs into J, an exboyfriend, as a substitute of a doctor. J behaves like a psychopomp, a guide with superior insight. He does two things for her: he runs a test and tells her she’s pregnant; also, tells her that her partner has to go to church.

Although the two things J says may seem like having a correlation, we encounter more problems when we observe more carefully. Could it be something so simple along the lines of “if you’re going to get pregnant, you need a man that will marry you”? This I can’t tell for sure, though it would certainly fulfill two of her waking-life wishes: getting pregnant and being in a committed relationship. In the dream, however, only the pregnancy has happened, but not the relationship. This may point to the following questions in the dream: you’re pregnant but who’s the father, is he committed to you? and why does your partner not go to church?

Lastly, she keeps seeking for a doctor, and the dream ends. The dream left us with more questions than answers. Sadly, I do not have much insight into her relationship to J, so I have no more comments in this regard. Perhaps if I knew what J means to her in a psychological level, we could have more insights into the meaning of this dream.

There’s one more thing to analize. Her partner is none other than her own unconscious. Both the partner and the doctor who are not present are that thing she needs to get in contact with to actually heal. This unconscious, the partner, however, needs to be Christianized, needs to go to church. Why? Well, the split off personalities of the unconscious are usually underdeveloped, primitive and infantile. Her Animus needs to be developed. If her partner does not go through this process, she will not find the doctor, who is the result of the partner, the unconscious maturation. The church is also not a place just for marrying but to “heal from sin,” to confess, to receive instruction. In her waking-life she may be a pious Christian girl, but her unconscious is pagan.

Dream 2:

I had a book, but it was complicated and difficult that I could not pass a class. Then you (me as the dream-interpreter) requested me that book to pass that course and I gave you that book.

Interpretation:

This dream occurred the day after I informed her of my first interpretations on the previous dream. I find it amazing how the unconscious adapts to current circumstances. Not only the dream tells her that she currently does not understand herself, her own mind, and finds it difficult, and that she needs to gather more insight into her situation; but also, the other thing that happened is that the phenomenon of transference took place, and now I take the place that J had in her previous dream (he was a technician or a doctor). The book (books are the result of insight, knowledge, instruction, focus) is something that I, or J, have. She does not have that in her just yet. It remains underdeveloped. However, in her dream, I am her unconscious, and her unconscious also wants to pass the course. She either needs to sit down and try to study herself, or seek that help from outside.

Unfortunately, there were no more dreams interpreted after these two. I believe the insights gained from these two dreams began to arouse some discomfort in her, and I don’t blame her. These things are not easy. They requiere emotional and intellectual effort. Perhaps she keeps trying to find a doctor or pass the class, or perhaps she already found the doctor or the teacher, within or without.
